As
of October 1, 2008, Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP) is the new name for
the Federal Food Stamp Program.
The new
name reflects our nutrition focus and changes
that will help us to better meet the needs of
our clients. Program improvements include an
increase in the minimum benefit (from $10 to
$14) and standard deduction, elimination of the
cap on dependent and child care deductions and
the exclusion of education and retirement
accounts from countable resources.
SNAP
is the federal name for the Program. State
programs may have different names. Please
reassure your clients that the name change will
not disrupt service or benefits. This name
change is mandated on the Federal level only,
though we very much encourage and support State
efforts to align their names with SNAP. Through
nutrition education partners, SNAP continues to
help clients learn to make healthy eating and
active lifestyle choices.
Please help us
spread the word about SNAP. We’ve developed a
number of SNAP resources, including newsletter
articles (short and long versions), labels for
your materials, and fact sheets. For access to
these materials and more information about the
name change, please click on the link below to
visit the site. If you have any questions,
please contact Laura Griffin via email at laura.griffin@fns.usda.gov.
Your continued support and enthusiasm
will help us fully implement the new name and
ensure that our Program continues to put healthy
food within reach for low-income Americans
nationwide.
Thank you.

Help
is available to assist in obtaining the 2007
Economic Stimulus Payment from the Internal
Revenue Service. Marcy Kaptur will be sponsoring
a FREE tax preparation workshop on MONDAY,
OCTOBER 6th from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm at the
Sanger Branch Library located at 3030 W. Central
Avenue.
More than 2,000 low-income
seniors and disabled veterans in the Ninth
Congressional District remain eligible for the
federal economic stimulus checks, but have
either not filed the necessary paper work or
have filed – but not yet received their checks.
Taxpayers face an October 15th deadline to file
a return or an amended return for the 2007 tax
year. My goal is for everyone who is eligible
for the payment to receive their check from the
government.
A taxpayer is required to
have a minimum of $3,000 in qualifying income to
be eligible for the stimulus payment. Social
Security benefits count toward that amount, but
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not.
Certain veterans benefits count towards the
$3,000 minimum, as do Railroad Retirement
Benefits.
In order to get the stimulus
checks, a taxpayer must file a 2007 tax return
using Form 1040 or Form 1040A. The taxpayer must
have a valid Social Security number and cannot
be claimed as a dependent (or be eligible to be
claimed as a dependent) on someone else’s tax
return. Please ask individuals to bring any
wage, income statements or tax returns to the
workshop. Should you have any questions, please
contact Theresa Morris-Ramos in my District
Office at 419/259-7500.

Kaptur U. S. Representative
